Time Off

Today, I had to get gas in my car. I work at the Barksdale Shoppette and I always get my gas from there. It is, supposedly, cheaper than everywhere else, but if anything it might be a few cents cheaper. While I was there getting gas, I decided to ask my boss if I could have next Saturday off, so that I could go to my friends wedding. Before I even said anything I accidentally grinned at her-she knows exactly what that means, time off-and she just said "NO." I told her that I haven't even said anything yet. She says, "I don't care, the answer is no."

When I asked her, she told me that she would "Try" to let me have the day off. I know what that means, "No." I know that I must put in a leave slip to her at least two weeks beforehand if I want to get off, but still sometimes, like this one, I forget to. Even if I do give a slip to her two weeks beforehand, she gets mad that I am taking off. "They" meaning "the man" just don't understand; employees do have lives outside of work. Hopefully this time she might "Try" to let me have the day off, but if I don't, in the words of my instructor, Mrs. Kathleen Smith, "It's my monkey."

Good luck. The worst revelation I ever had, and I had it later than most people, was that the world didn't revovle around me.

I have gained more perspective and learned the true need for empathy of others now, but still, at times, I close my eyes and dream of the days when, only in my mind, the world turned for and because of me.

In other words, I hope you get off work, and will understand your feeling of injustice if you are not able to. It might be "our monkey" as Ms. Smith says, but that doesn't mean we have to like it. Accept it? Yes. Like it? No.
